Having started on 17 March and running until 2 April, the Great British Spring Clean campaign is well under way.

Now in its eighth year, the Great British Spring Clean is a campaign run by the environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy, encouraging you to pick up one bag of litter – or more if you can – to keep our streets clean.

Protecting the environment has never been higher up on the agenda, which is why campaigns and events such as the Great British Spring Clean are great opportunities to play your part in caring for the natural world.

Read on to find out more about the Great British Spring Clean, and how you can get involved this year.

Tidying up the natural environment

It’s hard to deny that Britain is brimming with natural beauty, making communities around the country worth boasting about. Though, research from Keep Britain Tidy shows that less than 43% of adults in the UK feel proud of their community.

As you may expect, littering has many negative effects. Not only is it unsightly, but loose waste causes pollution, and can even harm wildlife. In fact, the RSPCA states that it received 10,483 calls reporting animals negatively impacted by litter over the last three years, a staggering 67 calls every week.

Clearing litter is also expensive – it costs hundreds of millions of pounds each year to clean our streets, which is money that could be better spent on education or social care. Even house prices can potentially be affected by excessive litter, making areas look uncared for and unkempt.

Thankfully, Keep Britain Tidy is determined to make you feel proud of your community and its natural beauty again with the Great British Spring Clean, the country’s most extensive mass-action environmental campaign.

The fantastic initiative operated in 42 counties across England and Wales last year, and 85% of those who took part reported that they felt more pride in their local area. Perhaps even more amazingly, 74% stated it improved their overall mood.

The benefits of litter-picking far outweigh the downsides – for such a simple task, you can make an immediate difference to the area around you.

Keep Britain Tidy is also running the Great Big School Clean in tandem with its Great British Spring Clean. The charity hopes this will encourage schoolchildren to clean their communities, too. It states that if every school child pledged to pick up just one bag of litter during the event, roughly 10.3 million bags of litter could be removed from Britain’s gorgeous natural environment.

You can pledge to pick up a bag of litter – or more – this year

If you’re keen to participate in the Great British Spring Clean and do your part for your local community, then pledging your support is easier than ever.

To take part, you simply need to visit the “pledge to pick” page on the Keep Britain Tidy website. Then, you can sign up as either an individual, group, or school.

The charity writes to every local authority to ask them to provide equipment to litter pickers, and to allocate areas to leave collected bags of refuse. It even provides a spreadsheet that includes information about local authorities’ support nationwide.

As of 14 March 2023, more than 170,000 bags of litter have already been pledged, which will make a dramatic difference to Britain’s streets and natural areas.

So, if you want to do your part for the environment and your local community this year, there may be no better way than pledging to take part in the Great British Spring Clean.
