Every business owner is used to thinking long-term for their business. Maybe even going as far to think about succession planning or the sale of a business. But not many actually stop and think about what they want to do when that’s all done.

The only place to start is with the big question: what’s next?

It’s not the end, it’s only the beginning

Way before you want to step away from the business, it’s worth thinking about what you want to do next. How do you want to spend your time? You might decide to stay involved in the business to some extent, or perhaps you’re ready to remove yourself entirely. Perhaps you want to travel more, spend quality time with your family. You might even want to set up another business!

Gone are the days when people viewed retirement as the end. These days for many people it’s only the beginning – and they’re about to enter one of the most exciting phases of their life.

Turn your goals into glory

Everyone has an idea of what they’d like to do in the future. But these ideas can disappear into the mist unless you do something concrete to make them happen. It’s like deciding to get fit or lose weight. Just telling someone what you intend to do doesn’t have any effect. It’s only when you start eating less or go for a run that anything happens.

It’s the same with your goals for the future. Just thinking about them won’t get you anywhere. To achieve them, the first step is to write them down. Then you have to put a plan in place to ensure they can happen. Only then will you have a clear picture of what you’re working towards – and know for sure that it’s possible to get there.
