On Saturday 29 June, a team of 100 brave children and adults will be taking on an Inflatable Run at Harewood House in Leeds. This hardy group of individuals are doing so to raise money for OSCAR’s Paediatric Brain Tumour Charity, a hugely important charity based in York.
At Cordiner Wealth, we’re delighted to support OSCAR’s in their fundraising efforts. Find out more about the work this incredible charity does.
Providing support for children with brain tumours and their families
OSCAR’s was founded in 2014 after the death of Oscar Hughes. Oscar died of a brain tumour at just age 9 in 2014, and so his parents decided to set up a charity in his name with a specific focus on children with brain tumours. Although brain tumours are the biggest cancer killers of people under 40, this is a much-neglected area of support.
OSCAR’s stands for “Ongoing Support, Care, Awareness and Research”, as this is exactly what the charity does. They provide support for children with brain tumours and their families, while raising awareness and fundraising for further research.
Based in York, OSCAR’s offer support to children and families all over the country. As a small Yorkshire charity, all donations make a huge difference to the support OSCAR’s can provide.
Life after brain tumour surgery can be extremely difficult, and children are often left with life-changing brain injuries. OSCAR’s tailor what they provide to the individual needs of each child. These are key needs, often unmet by the NHS, which improve lives now, rather than having to wait for something to become available.
OSCAR’s is raising money with an Inflatable Run on 29 June
OSCAR’s latest fundraising event is the Inflatable Run on 29 June. 100 children and adults together will bounce, slide, and jump over 37 different fun obstacles throughout a five-kilometre course at Harewood House.
The support that events like this can generate means OSCAR’s can continue to provide support and care to families, as well as raise awareness among parents, schools and healthcare professionals and fund groundbreaking research. In fact, OSCAR’s helped in part to fund the Leeds Neuropathology Tissue Bank, an essential facility for researchers to gain access to brain tumour samples, helping inform their work.
You can find out more about the Inflatable Run on the OSCAR’s website, and you can also watch the video of the great time everyone had at the last Inflatable Run two years ago.
OSCAR’s are supporting more local families in Yorkshire
Some of the families that OSCAR’s are currently working with are local families based in and around Yorkshire. This includes Alfie’s family, who are based in Bedale.
Alfie died aged 10 of a brain tumour in March. In memory of Alfie, his mum and brother, along with other members of their local community, are participating in the Inflatable Run on 29 June. OSCAR’s are tailoring their support to the current needs of Alfie’s family and will continue to work with them and his school for as long as they are needed.
You can find out more information about “Team Alf” on their JustGiving page.
Another little boy, Roux, from Hull is now aged five. He was born with a brain tumour and life has been a battle for him and his family. OSCAR’s funded a summer of physiotherapy to help Roux with walking before he went to preschool, and he has now taken his first steps unaided. You can read more of Roux’s story on the OSCAR’s website.
OSCAR’s Booster Box Project has also been a great success. A brain tumour diagnosis affects all members of a family, so these boxes are sent to children going through treatment for brain tumours and their siblings.
They include the children’s favourite things and are a “pick me up” of thoughtful, personalised gifts tailored to the child and their interests. The booster boxes can mean so much at a very difficult time.
OSCAR’s have sent 14 boxes out since the beginning of this year and another six went out in mid-May.
